Chapter 2
They say a person’s life consists of a balance of good luck and bad luck. When bad things happen, good things will eventually come.
But why does it have to be different for me? How am I different from the rest of them?
Call me ungrateful, but since I was born, bad luck has been piling up in my life. I have yet to see when my precious good luck will come. Just like now. Of all the times Martina bullied me, why did it have to be now that I stood up to her? Why, of all times, did the future Alpha have to visit the cafeteria at the exact moment I poured a bucket of dirty water over Martina? Why couldn’t it have been earlier, when she grabbed my arm and threw trash all over me? Why? Why?
“What’s going on here?” Alaric’s voice boomed across the room.
I hadn’t seen him in five years since he left to train in the heavenly realm. He seemed to have grown fiercer—and stronger.
“Alaric, you’re back!” Martina exclaimed, rushing toward him. She actually tried to embrace him, but Alaric deftly sidestepped her attempt.
“I asked what’s happening here,” he repeated, his tone sharp with irritation.
My gaze dropped to his body. He was bulkier now, his presence commanding. Not bad.
“Uhm—” I began, but Martina interrupted me.
“That omega bullied me!” she cried
theatrically. “She poured dirty water on me.”
Alaric’s piercing gaze shifted to me.
“Is that true?”
“I didn’t bully her—” I started, trying to explain.
“I saw you pouring water on her. Isn’t that true?” he pressed.
“Well, yes, but—”
“If that isn’t bullying in your dictionary, I don’t know what else is.”
My heart sank. He had already sided with her without hearing the whole story. He’s supposed to be upright and just, but instead, he’s like all the others—quick to judge.
“How dare an omega fight a beta’s blood?!”
This man would be my Alpha, the one whose decisions would shape my future. He was meant to be a fair leader, yet here he was, already condemning me.“Answer me, omega!”
But I didn’t. What was the point? He’d already made up his mind. I took a deep breath and met his gaze.
“You’ve already decided my guilt,” I said calmly. “Just get it over with and punish me.”
Surprise flashed across his face. He expected me to cower, to beg for forgiveness like any other wolf would before a furious Alpha. But not me. I’m different. Maybe stupid, but definitely different.
“Arrogance does not befit an omega,” he said, stepping closer and grabbing my collar. “You want punishment? How about twenty lashes? Let’s see how long you last before begging for mercy.”
“Never,” I replied, holding his gaze.
“Let’s see.”
Not an hour later, I found myself outside in the scorching sun. The heat blurred my vision, but I wasn’t afraid. I could hear the murmurs of the gathered crowd. Most of them looked terrified, though their curiosity kept them rooted in place. Martina and her gang, however, were visibly smug, their satisfaction palpable.
“Kneel,” Alaric commanded.
“Can I remove my top? I don’t want it ruined,” I asked, my voice devoid of fear.
“Don’t waste my time, omega. Remove it if you must!” he snapped.
I did as he said, baring my back to the crowd. I knelt, waiting for the familiar sting of the whip, but it never came.
I glanced back and saw Alaric drop the whip. His expression had shifted to one of shock and anger. He was staring at my scarred back. Right—he’d been gone for five years. He didn’t know about the punishments I’d endured for fighting back against the constant bullying. Twenty lashes were nothing compared to what I’d already survived.
“Stop!” Ruse’s voice rang out as she ran toward us. “Please, Alaric.”
Ruse placed herself protectively in front of me, her small frame shielding mine. The murmurs from the crowd grew louder. She was defying the future Alpha—an act of bravery, or perhaps foolishness.
“Ruse,” Alaric said, his tone softening slightly.
“Alaric, please. Aroa is my friend,” Ruse pleaded.
“I know you’re both omegas, Ruse, but you’re different from her,” he said, his gaze hardening as it returned to me.
“She needs to learn her lesson.”
“She’s always been bullied by the others,” Ruse argued. “This might also be the case now.”
“That’s not what I saw!”
The murmurs abruptly ceased as the crowd parted to reveal a regal figure in a black suit. Luna Stella, Alaric’s mother and the Luna of the Dark Blood Pack, had arrived.
“Mother,” Alaric said, stepping back slightly.
“Alaric, stop this now,” Luna Stella commanded. Her voice was calm yet authoritative. Then she addressed the crowd. “Return to your duties. I will handle this matter privately.”
The crowd dispersed reluctantly. Alaric approached his mother, his frustration evident.
“Mother, may I speak with you?” he asked.
“We will discuss this in the pack house,” she said before turning to me. “You, put your shirt on and follow us.”
We entered the pack house’s conference hall, a room I’d never seen before. The thick walls muffled outside noise, creating an atmosphere of isolation. A long table dominated the center of the room, flanked by office chairs. A set of couches and a coffee table occupied one corner. Clearly, this was where important matters were discussed.
“Mother,” Alaric began as he closed the door. I sank into one of the couches, my knees barely holding me up. Alaric noticed but didn’t comment.
“Why did you want to punish her?” Luna Stella asked.
“She bullied the Beta’s daughter,” Alaric replied defensively. “She also disrespected me. She does not fear my authority.”
“Did you investigate the matter?”
“Mom, I saw it with my own eyes. She poured dirty water on Martina.”
“I asked if you investigated it.”
“No,” he admitted reluctantly.
“Aroa, tell me the truth about what happened,” Luna Stella said, her gaze steady.
I recounted the events, my voice steady but tinged with bitterness. “Mrs. Robins told me to clean the cafeteria. While I was sweeping, Martina called me a slave and threw trash on me. So…”
“So, you poured a bucket of dirty water on her,” Luna Stella finished for me.
“Yes,” I admitted.
“Mom, you don’t know if she’s telling the truth,” Alaric protested.
“Alaric, I know. I was there long before you arrived. I saw everything.”
I stared at her in disbelief. She was there? How? When? Then the Luna smiled, answering my unspoken questions.
“I was there, Aroa. I was the kitchen lady.”
I forgot to breathe. She was the kind, patient kitchen lady? But how? The Luna’s smile widened as she began chanting. A moment later, her form shifted, and the kitchen lady stood before us.
“Oh my god!” I exclaimed, forgetting for a moment who she was.
“This is the disguise spell,” she explained. “I wanted to learn more about our people, so I chose to experience their lives firsthand.”
“By pretending to be a kitchen lady?” Alaric asked incredulously. “This is ridiculous, Mom!”
“Still, it allowed me to uncover the truth,” she said firmly. Alaric fell silent, his expression conflicted.
Finally, he sighed. “I admit I was wrong, Mom. I should have investigated first. But this omega…” He shot me a glare. “She challenged my authority. I couldn’t let that slide.”
Luna Stella’s eyes gleamed with mischief. “You want her to change?” she asked.

Chapter 6 My mind was in turmoil. I don’t tolerate liars. Chaos’s words echoed in my head, a relentless reminder of the web of lies I’d spun since arriving at the palace. I had been deceiving him, hiding my true identity and my mission. What would he think if he found out? Would he ever forgive me? Could I even face him again? The guilt weighed heavily on me, a constant ache in my chest. I sighed deeply, trying to push the thoughts away, but they clung to me like shadows. A knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. I opened it to find Chaos standing there, his expression filled with concern. Without waiting for an invitation, he walked in and sat on my bed. I followed, sitting beside him. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice soft. “What’s wrong?” I echoed, stalling for time. “You know what I’m talking about,” he said, his eyes searching mine. “You’ve been acting strangely since yesterday, after your talk with Marcela.” Should I tell him? The question gnawed at me. If I did, I’d be b...
Chapter 5 I was still bothered by the painting I’d seen the day before, but I pushed the thought aside. I had a more urgent situation to deal with: Amari had sent me a message asking for an update. I didn’t know how Amari had managed it, but I found the message under my plate of hotdogs during dinner. With Chaos sitting right across from me, I nearly had a heart attack when I noticed the paper barely hidden beneath the plate. Thankfully, I was wearing a dress with long sleeves, so I was able to discreetly slip the paper under my right sleeve. I excused myself immediately after dinner, claiming I was exhausted. Chaos seemed disappointed but didn’t protest. He simply escorted me to my room and kissed me goodnight. That was close. Now, alone in my room, I stared at the message. I had nothing to report—no progress, no leads. Worse, I wasn’t sure I even wanted to reveal anything about Chaos. It felt like no matter what I did, I’d be betraying someone. The next morning, I decided to have bre...
