Chapter 19
“Kid!” Gideon poked my shoulder.
I ignored him. Thanks to his insanity, we were now sitting in a dungeon cell, surrounded by rats. I hate rats.
“Kid!” he repeated.
“Kid! Kid! Aroa!”
“Stop poking my shoulder!” I snapped.
“Why are you in a bad mood?” he asked innocently.
I glared at him. “Look where we are!”
“Inside the palace,” he said proudly. “Just like you wanted.”
“I didn’t mean the dungeons!”
“Ow.”
“Ow? That’s all you’ve got to say?”
“Don’t worry,” he said confidently. “They’ll release us soon. You’ll see.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but the clanking of metal interrupted me. A guard appeared, unlocked our cell, and bowed low.
“We apologize, Your Highness,” the guard said.
Your Highness?
“Please follow us,” the guard added.
We were led to a grand, elegant room adorned with intricate tapestries and golden accents. Waiting for us was an old woman dressed in flowing white robes. She immediately knelt and bowed low.
“We apologize for the misunderstanding, Your Highness,” she said.
“Oh, it’s alright, Nana,” Gideon said casually. “No harm done.”
“Thank you for your graciousness, Your Highness,” she replied, rising to her feet.
I grabbed Gideon’s sleeve and hissed, “Why are they calling you ‘Your Highness’? Did you con them?”
He raised an eyebrow. “How rude—”
“How dare you grab the Royal Duke like that!” Nana snapped, glaring at me.
Royal Duke?!
“I-I…” I stammered, searching for an explanation.
“Slap her!” Nana demanded.
“Stop!” Gideon’s voice boomed, silencing the room. “Don’t you recognize her?”
Nana’s sharp eyes turned to me, her expression confused.
“This is Aroa,” Gideon said, his voice softening. “My only niece. Selena’s daughter.”
---
Later, I sat in the east wing of the palace, staring at the lavish room they had assigned me. Apparently, it was reserved for honored guests. The bed was soft, the decor exquisite, and the bath… Oh, the bath was a dream.
After cleaning off the mud and swapping my filthy clothes for the free ones provided, I immediately regretted my decision. The dresses were hideous—frilly, floral, and unbearably girly.
Ugh.
A knock on the door snapped me out of my thoughts. A servant entered and guided me to a place called the tea room.
The moment I walked in, I spotted Gideon and Nana drinking tea.
“Hey,” I greeted without thinking.
Nana shot me a disapproving look.
“Aroa!” Gideon grinned, gesturing for me to join them.
“This is Nana,” he said, introducing the stern woman. “She was our nanny when we were kids. She’s been in the palace ever since.”
“Good day, ma’am,” I said, forcing a polite tone.
Nana didn’t smile. Instead, she poured me a cup of tea and spoke, her voice sharp. “The Royal Duke has told us about you. While you do resemble the queen, we cannot rely on appearances alone. We need proof.”
“I don’t have anything from my parents,” I admitted. “I was told I was abandoned at birth.”
Nana’s brows furrowed as she thought deeply. I took a cautious sip of the tea and immediately regretted it. It was so bitter I nearly gagged but managed to keep a straight face.
“There are two ways to confirm your identity,” Nana finally said. “The Blood Goblet of Selena and the Mirror of No Lies.”
“Mirror of No Lies…” I repeated. “What is that?”
“It is a magical mirror,” Nana explained. “It reveals the truth and only the truth.”
“Can’t Selena confirm it herself?” I asked.
Nana’s expression darkened. “She cannot. Before she gave birth, she disappeared for three days. When we found her, the child was gone, and she remembered nothing of those three days.”
“Where is she now?” Gideon asked, his voice tense.
“After you left for the mortal realm, the queen left the palace to find a cure for her lost memories and to search for her child.”
I processed her words, my mind racing. “Where is the mirror?” I asked.
“The Mirror of No Lies is in the possession of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld,” Nana said gravely.

Chapter 6 My mind was in turmoil. I don’t tolerate liars. Chaos’s words echoed in my head, a relentless reminder of the web of lies I’d spun since arriving at the palace. I had been deceiving him, hiding my true identity and my mission. What would he think if he found out? Would he ever forgive me? Could I even face him again? The guilt weighed heavily on me, a constant ache in my chest. I sighed deeply, trying to push the thoughts away, but they clung to me like shadows. A knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. I opened it to find Chaos standing there, his expression filled with concern. Without waiting for an invitation, he walked in and sat on my bed. I followed, sitting beside him. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice soft. “What’s wrong?” I echoed, stalling for time. “You know what I’m talking about,” he said, his eyes searching mine. “You’ve been acting strangely since yesterday, after your talk with Marcela.” Should I tell him? The question gnawed at me. If I did, I’d be b...
Chapter 5 I was still bothered by the painting I’d seen the day before, but I pushed the thought aside. I had a more urgent situation to deal with: Amari had sent me a message asking for an update. I didn’t know how Amari had managed it, but I found the message under my plate of hotdogs during dinner. With Chaos sitting right across from me, I nearly had a heart attack when I noticed the paper barely hidden beneath the plate. Thankfully, I was wearing a dress with long sleeves, so I was able to discreetly slip the paper under my right sleeve. I excused myself immediately after dinner, claiming I was exhausted. Chaos seemed disappointed but didn’t protest. He simply escorted me to my room and kissed me goodnight. That was close. Now, alone in my room, I stared at the message. I had nothing to report—no progress, no leads. Worse, I wasn’t sure I even wanted to reveal anything about Chaos. It felt like no matter what I did, I’d be betraying someone. The next morning, I decided to have bre...
