Blood of Immortals | Chapter 18

Chapter 18

I wanted to ask Gideon why he had mentioned Selena last night. Were we talking about the same Selena? But it seemed he didn’t remember a thing from yesterday. For now, I decided to let it go.

“So, how do we call the gates?” I asked, watching him skeptically.

“Simple,” he said, raising the passes above his head dramatically.

“Gates!”

Nothing happened.

“Are you sure this is how it works?” I asked, crossing my arms.

“Shhh,” he said, closing his eyes as if summoning divine power. “I need to focus.”

Then, louder, “Gates!”

We waited.

Still nothing.

“Gates! Gates! Gates! Gates!” he shouted repeatedly, his voice echoing in the still air.

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Gideon, shouting louder won’t—”

Before I could finish, the passes began to glow and levitate. A blinding light erupted from them, expanding until it towered over us, forming an archway.

“Well,” Gideon said smugly, turning to me. “What were you saying?”

I rolled my eyes. “Let’s just go!”

Without another word, we stepped into the gates.

I had braced myself for the worst—maybe a legion of demons waiting on the other side or a fiery wasteland filled with traps. But I wasn’t prepared for this.

We landed face-first in a massive pile of mud.

Of all places, why here?

Now, we were trudging through the demon realm, coated in mud from head to toe.

“Gross,” I muttered, trying to scrape the muck off my arms.

“So, where are you headed now?” Gideon asked casually.

“I’m looking for the palace of wolves,” I said absentmindedly, still focused on the mud sticking to my boots.

“Why?” His tone shifted, suddenly intrigued.

“I just want to confirm my identity,” I said, glancing at him.

“You don’t know who you are?”

“I need to confirm who my parents are,” I explained. “Some people told me I was Selena’s daughter.”

He stopped walking abruptly, staring at me as though seeing me for the first time. Were those… tears in his eyes?

“Hey, old man, are you crying?” I asked, frowning.

He wiped his face with his sleeve and grinned. “Nuh! I was just distracted by your smell.”

“Seriously?” I glared at him, then stormed ahead.

“Aroa!” he called out, jogging to catch up.

“What?”

“I’ll take you to the palace of wolves.”

“You know where it is?” I stopped in my tracks, surprised.

“Better than anyone else,” he said with a cocky grin.

For once, my respect for Gideon increased.

“Do you know how we can get inside?”

“Easy,” he said, his grin widening.

That should’ve been my first warning.

Within minutes of reaching the palace gates, we were arrested.

And I knew exactly why.

It was all because of this idiot beside me.

The moment we approached the guards, he started causing a scene.

“Let us in!” Gideon shouted. “Selena’s heir is here!”

The guards looked unimpressed.

“Go away,” one of them barked.

“Don’t make me repeat myself!” Gideon argued, his voice rising.

“Gideon, what are you doing?” I hissed, pinching his arm. “Are you trying to get us killed?”

“Relax,” he whispered, rubbing his arm. “Trust me, Aroa. They’ll let us in.”

“Arrest them!” one of the guards ordered.

In an instant, a swarm of guards surrounded us, swords pointed at our throats.

“See?” Gideon whispered triumphantly, as if this had all been part of his brilliant plan.

Crazy. Absolutely crazy.
