Chapter 7
“Are you sure?” I asked, crossing my arms and trying to appear more skeptical than vulnerable. Vulnerability wasn’t a good look on me.
“No,” Alaric admitted, his voice soft but steady. “But what I am sure of is that I could never feel this way for you if I had another destined mate.”
“Oh, well, in that case…” I rolled my eyes, but my heart was doing somersaults. “What about your father? You know, the one who treats omegas like chewing gum stuck to his boots?”
Alaric’s jaw tightened. “I’ll convince him.”
“Convince him?” I raised an eyebrow. “This is the same man who threw a tantrum because someone dared to put oregano on his steak. Are you sure you can pull that off?”
“I will be the Alpha in a few months,” he said, his voice firm with determination. “Once I have the title, he can’t do anything about it.”
I sighed, dragging it out for dramatic effect.
“Alright.”
“Wait, alright? You mean…”
“Yes, Alaric.” I grinned, trying to keep the butterflies in my stomach from staging a coup. “We’re together now. Try not to die of excitement.”
“Great!” His face lit up like a kid discovering cake for the first time. Then he pulled me into a hug, so tight I thought my ribs might have cracked. “I promise you, Aroa, I’ll protect you no matter what. Just... we’ll have to keep this low-key until I take over as Alpha.”
“Low-key?” I mumbled into his shoulder. “Sure, we’ll be the poster wolves for subtlety.”
Despite my sarcasm, I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. But if there was anyone worth the headache, it was him. Probably.
Later, I brought him to the hospital. The silver knife wound wasn’t too deep, but it was bad enough that the doctor insisted on a week of rest. Alaric was less than thrilled about being benched, but I figured it was a win if it kept him out of trouble—for now.
That afternoon, the trial hall buzzed with tension. Martina was front and center on the platform, held down by two warriors. She didn’t look so smug now. Her father, Beta Marcus, and her brother Samuel sat nearby, looking like they’d rather be anywhere else.
Alpha Angus glared at Marcus. “How did you raise your daughter to this?” His voice could have frozen fire. “She tried to kill my son—the future Alpha!”
Marcus stood, his head bowed. “I failed her, Alpha. Whatever punishment you decide, she will accept.”
“Father, I’m innocent!” Martina whined, her voice grating on my last nerve. “It’s that omega I wanted to ki—”
Before she could finish, Beta Marcus was on her, clawing her face so fast I barely registered what happened.
“How dare you speak of murdering your own pack!” he snarled.
Martina screamed, clutching her face, her cries more of shock than pain. I guess Daddy’s princess didn’t think the rules applied to her. Her father kneeled before the Alpha, his voice grim.
“Her wounds will heal, but her scars will remain. Let them remind her of her shame. From now on, my daughter will serve the pack alongside the omegas.”
Alpha Angus narrowed his eyes, clearly weighing the punishment. “Martina Melendez,” he declared. “You will lose your rank and status as Beta. From this day forward, you are an Omega and will work as a farm slave.”
“No!” Martina shrieked, struggling against the warriors. “Father, don’t let this happen! Samuel, help me!”
But no one did. The warriors dragged her away, her screams echoing in the hall.
After the trial, I went to check on Alaric at the hospital. When I got to his room, I stopped short.
Ruse was there.
She sat by his bed, peeling an apple with what I could only describe as unnecessary care. She smiled, her expression soft as Alaric spoke to her.
I didn’t need a Seer to tell me what was going on.
Chapter 6 My mind was in turmoil. I don’t tolerate liars. Chaos’s words echoed in my head, a relentless reminder of the web of lies I’d spun since arriving at the palace. I had been deceiving him, hiding my true identity and my mission. What would he think if he found out? Would he ever forgive me? Could I even face him again? The guilt weighed heavily on me, a constant ache in my chest. I sighed deeply, trying to push the thoughts away, but they clung to me like shadows. A knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. I opened it to find Chaos standing there, his expression filled with concern. Without waiting for an invitation, he walked in and sat on my bed. I followed, sitting beside him. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice soft. “What’s wrong?” I echoed, stalling for time. “You know what I’m talking about,” he said, his eyes searching mine. “You’ve been acting strangely since yesterday, after your talk with Marcela.” Should I tell him? The question gnawed at me. If I did, I’d be b...
