Blood of Immortals | Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Despite Ruse’s endless warnings, I still needed to talk to Alaric. We were together now—or at least, I thought we were. Until he told me otherwise, I’d hold on to my faith in him. Alaric wouldn’t betray me. He couldn’t.
Unfortunately, Ruse’s servants seemed to have taken her paranoia to heart. Their constant surveillance made sneaking away nearly impossible. Instead of just hovering around, they’d started assigning me tasks that were clearly not mine—jobs that other omegas used to handle. Way to go Ruse!
But that wasn’t what bugged me most. No, what gnawed at me like an itch I couldn’t scratch was Alaric’s absence. Days passed, then weeks, and he didn’t visit me—not even when I was stuck in the hospital.

What was his excuse? Was he sick? Hurt? Captured by feral wolves? My imagination spiraled.

I tried searching for him discreetly, but it was like chasing a shadow. He wasn’t in the Alpha’s residence. He wasn’t at the pack house. Wherever he was, he wasn’t anywhere I could find him.

By the time the hospital scheduled my bandages to come off, my curiosity had morphed into desperation. Maybe I could finally dig up some answers there. At least the hospital was neutral ground—far away from Ruse’s nosy lackeys.

After what felt like forever, Martha finally appeared, bustling down the corridor in her usual efficient way.

“Martha!” I waved her down like a drowning woman spotting a lifeboat.

“Aroa!” she greeted me with a smile. “I see the bandages are off. You’re healing well!”

“Yeah, thanks,” I said casually, but my heart was racing. “Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask… I haven’t seen the Alpha’s son around lately. Alaric. Do you know where he’s been?”
Her brow furrowed thoughtfully before she answered, “Oh, I heard he went to the Royal Palace.”

The Royal Palace? My stomach twisted. “Why?”

“Probably to report that the princess was found,” she replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “And, well… he’s the destined demon, right? He’s likely working out the details of his engagement with the princess.”

Engagement? The word hit me like a slap. I forced a tight-lipped smile. “I see.”
But inside, my thoughts screamed louder than any wolf’s howl.

An entire month dragged by before I heard the whispers: Alaric was back. He’d returned with wolves from the Royal Palace. But the Queen, Selena? She hadn’t come with them. Apparently, she was still away, journeying to find her missing daughter. That meant she hadn’t even learned the supposed princess had been found.

That night, as the pack buzzed with his return, I decided I’d waited long enough. It was time to confront him.

Sneaking into Alaric’s office felt like stepping back in time. Everything was just as I remembered—neatly organized, cold, impersonal.

“Aroa.” His voice startled me. I spun around to find him standing in the doorway. His expression was tired, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion. “What are you doing here?”

“I needed to talk to you,” I said simply, crossing my arms. “It’s been weeks, Alaric. No messages, no visits. I was starting to think you’d forgotten about me.”

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, Aroa. Things have been… complicated. I didn’t mean to stay away.”

“Fine,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm in my chest. “Then just tell me this: are we still together?”

His eyes widened, shock flashing across his face. “Of course, Aroa! How could you even ask me that?”

Before I could reply, he closed the distance between us and pulled me into his arms. For a moment, everything melted away—my doubts, my anger, my fears. In his embrace, it was easy to believe in us again.

But the moment passed, and he let go.
“I have something to tell you,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

“What is it?”

“It’s about the blood goblet,” I began.
His expression darkened. “What about it?”

“I think it’s my blood,” I admitted, watching his face carefully.

“What?” He blinked, clearly caught off guard. “Explain.”

I took a deep breath and launched into the story. “When the hunters attacked, I found Ruse. She was being held captive. She… she got stabbed with silver. I thought she was going to die. So, I used a spell I’d read about. The blood spell.”

“You performed a spell?”

“Yes,” I said, nodding. “I brought her to the temple, slashed my wrist, and poured my blood into the goblet of Selena.”

He stared at me in silence for a long moment. Then, to my shock, he shook his head.
“Aroa, you don’t have to make up stories like this,” he said, his tone suddenly sharp.

I flinched. “What are you talking about? I’m telling the truth!”

“You don’t have to lie to me,” he said, his voice firm. “Claiming a Royal’s identity is a serious crime. Just wait a little longer, okay? Once I receive my Alpha title, I’ll make things right for us.”

His words stung more than I cared to admit. “I’m not lying, Alaric!”

He looked at me like I was a stubborn child refusing to accept reality. “You’re a demon, Aroa. Only gods can perform the blood spell without dying. If you’d really done it, the exchange would’ve killed you.”
